Cost of living in Chandigarh 2026: a real monthly budget for singles and families (plus Mohali and Zirakpur)

What it costs to live in Chandigarh, Mohali and Zirakpur in 2026, built from real prices: 1BHK singles from ₹23k–₹44k a month, families ₹47k–₹84k, and how it compares with Delhi and Bengaluru.
Short answer: A single working professional renting a 1BHK spends roughly ₹27,000–₹44,000 a month in central Chandigarh, ₹25,000–₹39,000 in Mohali’s IT City belt and ₹23,000–₹36,000 in Zirakpur. Rent is about half of that. A family of four in a 2BHK should budget about ₹47,000–₹84,000, depending on the town, before school fees and EMIs. Day-to-day prices are close to Delhi, Pune or Bengaluru. The Tricity is cheaper mainly on rent. Crowd-sourced data puts Bengaluru rents about 74% higher than Chandigarh’s.

Most “cost of living in Chandigarh” figures online are either one crowd-sourced number with no breakdown or a list of prices from 2023. Neither helps if you are deciding whether a Mohali job offer covers a move from Delhi, or whether a Zirakpur 2BHK leaves room for a car.
This page builds the budget from the bottom up. It uses each piece’s current price: the electricity tariff order, the LPG and petrol price, the Verka milk rate, broadband plans, and Hoomzz’s August 2026 rent observations. You can swap in your own numbers. It covers Chandigarh, Mohali and Zirakpur separately, because the three cities differ in ways that change the bill, from fuel tax to free electricity to whether you can book an Uber.
Rent: the number that decides everything
Rent is the largest line and the one that varies most. These are the ranges Hoomzz published in its Tricity rental market report for August 2026, as market observation.

Expect a security deposit of one to three months’ rent up front, and society maintenance on top of rent in many Mohali and Zirakpur projects. Our explainer on society maintenance charges and hidden costs covers what that adds. Moving for a job? Our guide to where to rent for an IT job in the Tricity matches areas to offices and commutes.
The everyday prices, checked
| Item | Price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Electricity, Chandigarh (domestic, FY 2026-27) | ₹2.95 per unit for 0–100; ₹3.75 for 101–200; ₹4.80 for 201–300; ₹5.00 for 301–400; ₹5.40 above 400; plus ₹30 per kW a month | JERC tariff order; duty and fuel surcharge extra |
| Electricity, Mohali and Zirakpur (PSPCL, FY 2026-27) | 300 units a month free for domestic connections used only for housing. Beyond that, ₹3.85 per unit for the first 300 and ₹7.05 above (up to 2 kW load) | General-category homes that cross 300 units are reported to pay for all units |
| Cooking gas, 14.2 kg cylinder | ₹951.50 | Same in Chandigarh and Mohali |
| Verka milk, per litre | ₹71 full cream; ₹65 standard | Raised by ₹2 on 14 May 2026 |
| Petrol, per litre | ₹101.51 Chandigarh; ₹105.79 Mohali | About ₹4 cheaper in the UT |
| Broadband, 100 Mbps | ₹699–₹799 a month + 18% GST | JioFiber and Airtel entry 100 Mbps plans |
| Auto rickshaw, Chandigarh | ₹50 for the first 3 km, then ₹13 per km | UT-notified fare, July 2025 |
| Water, Chandigarh | From ₹3 per kilolitre on the first 15 kl (2022 base rate), +5% a year, plus 20% sewerage cess | A small household pays little; heavy use costs more |
Two Tricity quirks that change the budget in 2026. First, Chandigarh’s State Transport Authority suspended Uber and Rapido for six months from 9 September 2026, after earlier suspending Ola and InDrive. The suspension covers Chandigarh UT only. Inside the UT, plan on autos at the notified fare, the CTU bus and the cooperative Bharat Taxi app, which was still running. Second, Punjab’s 300 free units of electricity can make a Mohali or Zirakpur power bill zero. They apply per domestic connection, so ask the landlord whether the flat has its own meter used only for housing, and what happens in May and June when the AC pushes you past 300.
Budget 1: a single working professional in a 1BHK
The non-rent lines below are built from the prices above. The groceries, eating-out and transport lines are Hoomzz estimates for a moderate lifestyle. For scale, CRISIL put the national cost of a home-cooked veg thali at ₹29.50 in August 2026. Two meals a day of that is about ₹1,800 a month, and real grocery bills sit well above that floor once breakfast, fruit and household items are added.
| Line | Monthly | How we got it |
|---|---|---|
| Groceries and household | ₹6,000–₹9,000 | Estimate, cooking at home most days |
| Milk | about ₹1,000 | Half a litre a day of Verka standard at ₹65 |
| Cooking gas | about ₹500 | One ₹951.50 cylinder every two months |
| Electricity | ₹550–₹1,500 (Chandigarh); ₹0–₹1,800 (Mohali, Zirakpur) | 150–350 units at the tariffs above; the Punjab figure depends on the 300 free units |
| Water | under ₹300 | Estimate for one person |
| Broadband | ₹825–₹945 | ₹699–₹799 plan plus GST |
| Transport | ₹1,500–₹3,000 | Scooter fuel plus a few autos a week |
| Eating out and weekends | ₹3,000–₹6,000 | Estimate |
| Total excluding rent | about ₹13,500–₹22,000 |
| Area | 1BHK rent | All-in monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Chandigarh central | ₹14,000–₹22,000 | ₹27,500–₹44,000 |
| Mohali IT City belt | ₹12,000–₹17,000 | ₹25,500–₹39,000 |
| Zirakpur | ₹9,500–₹14,000 | ₹23,000–₹36,000 |
| Kharar | ₹7,500–₹11,500 | ₹21,000–₹33,500 |
Sharing a 2BHK cuts both the rent and the utilities per head. Two people splitting a ₹20,000 Mohali 2BHK pay less each than one person in most 1BHKs above. Hoomzz’s flatmate listings exist for exactly that. For students, whose budget looks very different because PGs usually include food, see our cost of living guide for students in Chandigarh.
Budget 2: a family of four in a 2BHK
| Line | Monthly | How we got it |
|---|---|---|
| Groceries and household | ₹15,000–₹22,000 | Estimate |
| Milk | about ₹3,200 | 1.5 litres a day of Verka full cream at ₹71 |
| Cooking gas | about ₹950 | One cylinder a month |
| Electricity | ₹1,300–₹2,300 (Chandigarh); ₹0–₹3,400 (Mohali, Zirakpur) | 300–500 units; Punjab bills jump once you cross 300 |
| Water | ₹200–₹500 | Estimate |
| Broadband | about ₹945 | 100 Mbps plan plus GST |
| Car fuel and local travel | ₹5,000–₹7,000 | About 50–70 litres at ₹101–₹106 |
| Eating out, outings | ₹5,000–₹10,000 | Estimate |
| Total excluding rent | about ₹32,000–₹48,000 |
Add a 2BHK at the rents above and a family’s month comes to roughly ₹56,000–₹84,000 in central Chandigarh, ₹50,000–₹75,000 in Mohali’s IT City belt, ₹47,000–₹70,000 in Zirakpur and ₹44,000–₹66,000 in Kharar.
Not in that figure:
- School fees. The most recent published survey we found is from 2022. It put annual tuition at leading Chandigarh private schools between about ₹80,000 and ₹1.55 lakh, with admission charges on top. Punjab capped annual private-school fee increases at 5% in August 2026, which covers Mohali and Zirakpur schools.
- Domestic help. This is negotiated locally, and we found no reliable published rate. For reference, Chandigarh’s minimum wage for full-time unskilled work was ₹14,737 a month for April–September 2026. That is a legal floor for full-time work, not a part-time maid’s rate.
- Loan EMIs, insurance, clothing and travel home.
Chandigarh vs Delhi, Bengaluru and Pune
Numbeo is crowd-sourced (for Chandigarh, 568 entries from 41 contributors, last updated in August 2026), so treat it as direction, not data. It finds everyday costs excluding rent within about 3% across Chandigarh, Delhi, Bengaluru and Pune. The gap is rent: Numbeo puts rents 45% higher in Delhi, 43% higher in Pune and 74% higher in Bengaluru than in Chandigarh. Petrol tells the same story. It cost ₹101.51 a litre in Chandigarh on 29 September 2026, against ₹102.12 in Delhi and ₹111.68 in Bengaluru. Retail inflation in August 2026 was 4.02% for Chandigarh against 4.82% nationally.
Numbeo’s own totals run higher than ours. It puts a single person at about ₹31,800 a month excluding rent and a family of four at about ₹1.14 lakh, because contributors log a fuller basket of clothing, gyms, frequent restaurant meals and imported goods. If that is how you live, use Numbeo. If you cook at home and ride a scooter, the bottom-up budget above is closer.
Whichever it is, rent is where the money is won or lost. Hoomzz lists verified rental flats across Chandigarh, Mohali, Zirakpur and Kharar without brokerage, which on its own saves the broker’s fee, often up to a month’s rent, at move-in. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the monthly cost of living in Chandigarh for a single person?
A single working professional renting a 1BHK in central Chandigarh spends roughly ₹27,500–₹44,000 a month in 2026. That is rent of ₹14,000–₹22,000 plus about ₹13,500–₹22,000 for groceries, milk, gas, electricity, broadband, transport and eating out. The same lifestyle costs about ₹25,500–₹39,000 in Mohali’s IT City belt and ₹23,000–₹36,000 in Zirakpur.
How much does a family need to live in Chandigarh?
A family of four in a 2BHK should budget about ₹56,000–₹84,000 a month in central Chandigarh in 2026, or ₹47,000–₹75,000 in Zirakpur or Mohali. That covers rent, groceries, milk, gas, electricity, water, broadband, car fuel and outings. It excludes school fees, which ran from about ₹80,000 to ₹1.55 lakh a year at leading Chandigarh private schools in a 2022 survey, and loan EMIs.
Is Chandigarh cheaper than Delhi or Bengaluru?
Mainly on rent. Crowd-sourced Numbeo data for 2026 shows everyday costs excluding rent within about 3% across Chandigarh, Delhi, Bengaluru and Pune. Rents are about 45% higher in Delhi, 43% higher in Pune and 74% higher in Bengaluru. Chandigarh’s August 2026 retail inflation was 4.02%, below the national 4.82%.
Is Mohali cheaper to live in than Chandigarh?
Usually, because of rent. A 1BHK in Mohali’s IT City belt rents for about ₹12,000–₹17,000 against ₹14,000–₹22,000 in central Chandigarh. Punjab also gives domestic connections 300 free electricity units a month. Petrol is about ₹4 a litre dearer in Mohali, and groceries, milk and cooking gas cost the same on both sides.
Can I use Uber or Rapido in Chandigarh in 2026?
Not inside Chandigarh UT for now. On 9 September 2026 the State Transport Authority suspended Uber and Rapido for six months, after suspending Ola and InDrive earlier in the year, citing fare and compliance violations. The suspension applies to Chandigarh only. Autos charge the notified ₹50 for the first 3 km, and the cooperative Bharat Taxi app was still operating.

Estimates. Groceries, eating out, transport, water and the resulting totals are Hoomzz estimates for a moderate lifestyle, built on the checked unit prices listed. They are not survey data. Rents are Hoomzz’s August 2026 market observation. Electricity excludes duty and the fuel-cost surcharge. The treatment of Punjab households that exceed 300 units, and whether a tenant on a shared meter gets the free units, are reported rather than confirmed from the notification.
